Silicone 1.2kg cold process soap mold with wooden frame

I bought this mold as one of my first cold process soaping molds mainly because I wanted to try a variety of different soaping techniques and it was therefore important to be able to make a relatively small batch. Otherwise I might end up swimming in soapy experiments and I was not guaranteed that any of them would actually be successful. Let’s face it; soaping can be expensive for the beginner, especially when you want to try out some of the wonderful but more costly ingredients like cocoa butter and jojoba oil.

It turns out that this is the soaping mold I turn to most often, as I prefer small batching. A 1kg mold is a great size for the beginning soaper, as it is big enough to learn most of the different swirling and decorating techniques but not so much of a risk as a larger mold. It makes 8 really nice sized bars that are a great holding size.

The silicone lining of this mold means that you don’t have to line it, which is a great time saver. The soap should release quite easily about 24 hours after pouring and if it is still too soft to release cleanly, either letting it set longer or popping in the freezer briefly should help.

I don’t have any particular complaints about this mold, other than that the silicone might be a tad thick…I think a thinner liner may help turn the soap out just that bit easier. All in all though, it’s an inexpensive mold and it does the trick so I’d heartily recommend it to the beginning soapmaker, the dedicated small batcher or the highly experimental.

Cold process soap making requires combining oils with a caustic lye solution. Most successful soapmakers recommend making sure that both mixtures are within the same temperature range. I watch a lot of youtube videos about soapmaking and most of the dedicated soapmakers I have seen tend to use one of these non-contact temperature guns.

Initially I didn’t even factor it in as a possibility for me as a non-professional soapmaker because I assumed they would be horribly expensive. Good news; they’re not, necessarily.

The key to using a temperature gun (especially a less-expensive option) is to remember its limitations. First, it is a surface temperature reader. Don’t expect it to measure the deep temperature of your oils or lye solution.

Second, it’s not necessarily going to be accurate from a long distance. Try using it from about 30cm away from the target. However, these limitations aren’t really a problem for soapmaking, and the fact that you don’t have to dip a regular thermometer into your lye, rinse and wipe it, dip it into your oil, rinse and wipe it, repeat repeat repeat, is reason enough for me to recommend it heartily. A professional soaper might choose a more expensive/higher quality option but for the hobby soapmaker, cheap is the word here.

Secondly, it is practically challenging to create an opt-in list. If customers choose to receive messages from your website in the future, they have usually ticked a box on your website (and may even have chosen to receive customised emails in the areas of interest to them). However, if you are creating a new website for the first time with no opt in list, you will have to spend time, effort and money in getting a list built up. You can encourage people to subscribe to your online newsletter, by posting interesting articles or offering the chance to win a prize. This can be very time consuming. Alternatively, if you choose to buy the list of thousands of e-mail addresses. However, this is very risky. It is very difficult to know where these originally were collected.

Unfortunately, some spammers simply ‘harvest’ email addresses and unethically market them as an ‘opt in list’.

Legal Issues of Using Email Marketing

It is illegal and certainly unethical to send unsolicited e-mail. The legal framework across the world varies by country. Yet common principles seem to apply across these frameworks. Even an email sent by you by mistake, it may still break local Data Communications laws. Therefore, it is critical that when you send email you:-

Ensure no email is sent to a personal email addresses (unless they have opted to receive it);

Email sent to a businesses email address is properly addressed, with a physical reply to email address;

Clearly relevant to the business recipient i.e. you are selling ‘nuts’ and the recipient is selling ‘bolts’;

An ‘opt out message’ or instructions on how to opt out exist at the bottom of the e-mail;

Ensure it is customised to the individual, according to their opt in requirements i.e. any special offers relating to a specified interest.

It isn’t wise to submit an article that is already included in your own website. If the article directory has a high page rank search engines would consider the higher ranking website as the originator of the article. Hence, your lower ranking website, may be designated as holding duplicate content. This will have an adverse effect on your page rank.

Whenever you’re writing articles, remember that most article directories will allow you to use hyperlinks. The trick is in linking your website through what are known as anchor texts. These anchor texts should relate to the keywords you are targeting. Doing this would give a significant boost to your chances of getting a better position in the SERPs. For example, if the keyword you’re targeting is “fitness” make sure that you hyperlink your website to every mention of the term in your article.

Do not submit private label rights (PLR) articles as they are. Though PLR articles are great options for affordable content, they are not really meant for article marketing purposes. Duplicate articles submitted to the directories would just be rejected, or worse, can lead to the banning of your account. Instead, try to use the PLR articles as bases for the articles you will write for these directories. The information is already in these PLR articles, after all, hence you won’t need to spend time doing some necessary research. Write one, original article from the ground up, using your PLR articles as the foundation, and submit what is now your unique content to the directories.

Remember, people will be reading your articles. These are highly targeted readers. They will read your article because they are looking for information relevant to the subject of your work. Why are you reading this article?
